Job Seeker Guide to a Short & Effective Application Process: Game-Changing Strategies for Your Job Search
Navigating a job search can often be time-consuming and frustrating. However, there are strategies to make this process more efficient and educational. As someone who assists numerous candidates in their job search, I’ve noticed common mistakes and a general dislike for the application process, akin to “fighting with windmills” (a saying in both Latvian and English). This often stems from a lack of knowledge about effective application strategies, follow-ups, and seeking feedback.
From a recruiter’s perspective, the following list outlines how you should approach your job search to stand out and secure your dream job.
Keep a detailed record of all your job applications, including the company, job title, hiring manager’s name and contact details, application date, follow-up date, and outcome (e.g., phone interview, face-to-face interview, offer, or rejection).
After sending an application, enter this information into your list and set a calendar reminder to follow up within five business days.
Connect with hiring managers on LinkedIn or Xing. Engage with their content and start conversations, highlighting your application and common interests. This approach builds a rapport and sets you apart from other candidates.
Five workdays after application submission, be bold and call the hiring manager. This personal touch can be particularly impactful, especially in sales roles. One of my candidates secured a sales role just because he called to check upon his application. No joke. Ask about the status of your application and inquire about the interview process. A phone call adds a personal dimension to your CV and helps it stand out.
If you’re invited for an interview, clarify who you will be meeting with, what to expect, and how you can prepare. Also, inquire about the next steps post-interview.
If your application doesn’t proceed to the next stage, ask for reasons and how you can improve for future applications. Inquiring about CV screening criteria shows you are open to constructive criticism and eager to improve.
If feedback is pending, ask for a specific timeframe. Follow up again if you haven’t heard back within the promised period. Persistent follow-ups demonstrate your keen interest in the role and dedication to your job search.
Post-interview, send a note expressing gratitude for the opportunity. As they say in Germany, “you always meet twice in life.” Good manners can make a lasting impression.
Regularly update your Excel list to track your job search progress and stay organized.
Continue applying even after securing initial interviews to explore additional opportunities. Don’t limit yourself to a few applications; keep the momentum going.
By implementing these tips, you’ll notice a significant improvement in your job search process. Taking control of your job hunt will give you a sense of empowerment, a feeling many job seekers long for but seldom achieve. Embrace these strategies and watch your job search transform. Promise!
